Participation of the PABSEC International Secretariat to the IPU Webinar “The Power of Parliamentarians: Opportunities and Challenges for Effective Development Co-operation”, 30 March 2021
Mr. Miltiadis Makrygiannis, PABSEC Deputy Secretary General, attended the Webinar titled “The Power of Parliamentarians: Opportunities and Challenges for Effective Development Co-operation”, co-organized by the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) and the Global Partnership for Effective Development Co-Operation (GPEDC), on 30 March 2021.
The webinar was built on the topics raised in the “Guidelines for enhancing the engagement and contribution of parliaments to effective development co-operation”, a publication issued by the IPU and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
The parliamentarians and the experts that participated in the event discussed options for advancing parliamentary action on this topic and focused on the role of parliamentarians as valuable partners in ensuring that accountable, inclusive, participatory and transparent governance effectively delivers and utilizes development cooperation. They also aimed to provide parliamentarians with an understanding of what development co-operation is and how it works, as well as ideas on how parliaments can promote more effective and accountable use of resources. Moreover, the webinar gave the opportunity for parliamentarians to discuss the challenges and opportunities they face in fully exercising their legislative, budgetary and oversight functions around how development co-operation resources are spent.
