Participation of the PABSEC International Secretariat in the 5th Euro- Arab World Summit, Athens, 9-10 November 2020
The Euro-Arab Summit was held for the 5th consecutive year on 9 and 10 November 2020, with the support of the European Parliament and under the auspices of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Hellenic Republic.
It was entitled “A Strategic Partnership between the Arab World and the European Union” and, following global developments, was held in digital form.
Mr. Miltiadis Makrygiannis, PABSEC Deputy Secretary General attended the event.
Among the speakers was the Prime Minister of the Hellenic Republic Mr. Kyriakos Mitsotakis, the Foreign Minister of the Hellenic Republic Mr. Nikos Dendias, UAE Minister of Economy Mr. Abdulla Bin Touq Al Marri, the Prime Minister of Palestine Mr. Mohammad Shtayyeh, the Maltese Foreign and European Affairs Minister Mr. Evarist Bartolo, the Moroccan Foreign Minister Mr. Nasser Bourita, the Egyptian Minister of Trade and Industry Mr. Nevine Gamea, the Qatari Foreign Minister Mr. Al-Murak Soltan bin Sahad, the Italian Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Ms. Marina Sereni and Ms. Heike Harmgart, Managing Director for the Southern and Eastern Mediterranean (SEMED) region at the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development.
The Euro-Arab Summit recognizes the need to further strengthen Euro-Arab relations in times of turmoil for the world community, especially during the pandemic. For this reason, the thematic sections of this year’s event focused on issues relating to strengthening Euro-Arab economic and political cooperation, issues of joint response to geopolitical unrest, and the effects of the coronavirus on the Arab world. Discussions also focused on energy issues in the Middle East and the wider region, the importance of the infrastructure sector for development, the financing of various projects and the development of synergies, as well as investment in innovation.
