Participation of the PABSEC in the 15th PAM Plenary Session, 3-4 June 2021
Mr. Asaf Hajiyev, PABSEC Secretary General and Mr. Miltiadis Makrygiannis, PABSEC Deputy Secretary General, participated in the 15th Plenary Session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean (PAM) that took place online on 3-4 June 2021.
PAM President Mr. Karim Darwish inaugurated the session with a keynote speech, followed by a message by Mr. António Guterres, Secretary General of the United Nations. Over 180 delegates from different countries and international organizations joined the event.
The debates of the 3rd Standing Committee on Dialogue among Civilizations and Human Rights opened the works of the Plenary. Following the two presentations by Ms. Sandrine Mörch (France) and Ms. Marianne Amir Azer (Egypt) on Domestic Violence and the protection of Human Rights in an increasing digitalized society, delegates engaged in a parliamentary debate.
During the Session of the 2nd Standing Committee on Economic, Social and Environmental Cooperation took place, chaired by its President Mr. Pedro Roque (Portugal). Presentations by Mr. Francesco La Camera, Director General of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), Ms. Ljubica Maksimcuk (Croatia) PAM Rapporteur on Economy and Mr. Alain Perea (France), PAM Rapporteur on Environment tackled pivotal recent economic and environmental changes ongoing in the Mediterranean region.
During the Session of 1st Standing Committee on Political and Security-Related Cooperation chaired by its President Sen. Alia Bouran (Jordan), followed by the address by Annadif Khatir Mahamat Saleh, Under-Secretary-General and Head of the UN Office for West Africa and the Sahel (UNOWAS), and the presentations by Sen. Lhou Lmarbouh (Morocco) PAM Rapporteur on Security, and Mr. Gennaro Migliore (Italy) PAM Rapporteur on Counter-terrorism. During this Session, PAM parliamentarians reviewed the reports and recommendations on the critical security issues of concern for the PAM region, inter alia, the Middle-Est peace process and the evolving threat of terrorism.
At the end of the event, 2021 PAM Prize Laureates Award ceremony took place, abide by the Announcement of the results of the virtual elections of the new PAM Bureau and of PAM Presidency for the biennium 2021-2022. Mr. Gennaro Migliore (Italy) was elected as the new PAM President.
