Participation of the PABSEC International Secretariat to the UN Annual Parliamentary Hearing, 17-18 February 2021
Mr. Miltiadis Makrygiannis, PABSEC Deputy Secretary General, attended the UN Annual Parliamentary Hearing entitled “Fighting corruption to restore trust in government and improve development prospects”, hosted by the UN and IPU, on 17-18 February 2021.
The event was designed to ensure a parliamentary contribution to the Political Declaration of the United Nations General Assembly Special Session against corruption (UNGASS 2021). The hearing was opened by IPU President Mr. Duarte Pacheco and Mr. Volkan Bozkir, President of the UN General Assembly.
In their presentations, the parliamentarians and the experts of the UN and IPU focused on the effectiveness of the 2005 United Nations Convention against Corruption (UNCAC), on the ways that the UNCAC could be more competent, on the issues that emerged over the years that the UNGASS 2021 should address and the strategies that have to be adopted in order to ensure that other emergencies including pandemics do not derail anticorruption efforts.
Moreover, it has been presented and discussed a proposal to create an international anti-corruption court or another mechanism to prosecute corrupt leaders who may evade justice in their own countries.
During the second day of the event, the presentations and the discussions were focused on the impact of corruption on men and women and the measures that can be taken to strengthen the gender dimension of anti-corruption policies. Furthermore, several key anti-corruption measures were presented and some of the best practices at the national level.
